Getting started and frequently asked questions

Add your AI API key
Go to Settings and paste in your Anthropic or OpenAI API key. This is what powers the post generation. If you don't have one yet, click the link in Settings to sign up — it takes about 2 minutes and both providers offer free credits to get started.

Add your products or brands
Go to Settings → Your products and add each product or brand you want to promote. Give it a clear name, a description of what it does and who it's for, and a call to action. The better your description, the better your posts will be.

Generate your first posts
Go to Generate, pick a product and tone, choose how many posts per platform, and hit Generate. Socialsmith will write posts for Facebook, LinkedIn, X/Twitter and Bluesky simultaneously. Use the platform tabs to filter by channel, and hit Rewrite on any post you're not happy with.

Add your social groups
Go to Settings → LinkedIn Groups / Facebook Groups and add the groups you post in regularly. Once added, clicking Open LinkedIn or Open Facebook on any post will show a dropdown of your groups — click one to go straight to that group's compose window.

Schedule your posts
Hit Schedule on any generated post to assign it a date and time. View your week in the Schedule page — click any post to expand it, copy the text and open the platform. When you're ready, hit Export CSV to download a Buffer-compatible file for all platforms.

Rate your posts to train the AI
After posting, go to your Library and rate each post — 🔥 Great, 👍 OK, or 👎 Poor. Over time, Socialsmith learns what works for each of your products and platforms, and automatically adjusts future posts to match your best-performing style.

Reuse your best content
The Recycler page automatically surfaces posts you rated 🔥 Great that are older than 30 days — ready to copy or reschedule with one click. Your best content works multiple times, not just once.
What is an API key and where do I get one?
An API key is a private password that lets Socialsmith connect to an AI service on your behalf. You need one from either Anthropic (Claude) or OpenAI (GPT-4o).

Anthropic: Sign up at console.anthropic.com — new accounts get free credits.
OpenAI: Sign up at platform.openai.com — new accounts get free credits.

Your key is stored securely on our server and never shared.
How much does the AI cost to use?
Very little. Generating 12 posts (3 per platform across 4 platforms) costs approximately $0.03 using Claude Sonnet. A heavy user generating 10 batches per day would spend around $3/month in API costs. Both Anthropic and OpenAI offer free credits when you sign up, so you can get started for free.
Which AI provider should I choose — Anthropic or OpenAI?
Both produce excellent results. Claude (Anthropic) tends to write more naturally and with better narrative flow — great for storytelling posts. GPT-4o (OpenAI) is slightly more direct and punchy — great for shorter posts. Try both and see which you prefer. You can switch at any time in Settings.
How do I connect to Buffer or another scheduling tool?
Schedule your posts in the Schedule page, then click Export CSV. This downloads one CSV file per platform (Facebook, LinkedIn, X/Twitter, Bluesky) in Buffer's exact import format. In Buffer, go to your channel, click Import, and upload the relevant CSV. Buffer will queue everything automatically.

The same CSV format also works with Publer and Metricool.
What is the Evergreen Recycler?
The Recycler automatically finds your best-performing posts — ones you rated 🔥 Great — that are older than 30 days. These posts are worth reusing because most of your audience won't have seen them. One click copies or reschedules them, so you never run out of content even when you don't have time to generate new posts.
How does AI Content Intelligence work?
Every time you rate a post in the Library, Socialsmith records which platform, product and style performed well or poorly. Before generating new posts, it analyses your rating history and adjusts the AI prompt accordingly — for example, if storytelling-style Facebook posts consistently rate 🔥 Great for a particular product, future posts for that product will lean into that style. When intelligence is active, you'll see a purple banner above your generated posts confirming it was used.
Can I post directly from Socialsmith?
Not automatically — Facebook and LinkedIn actively block third-party auto-posting to personal profiles and business pages. Instead, Socialsmith makes manual posting as fast as possible: copy the post with one click, then use the Open [platform] button which takes you directly to that platform's compose window (or your chosen group). The whole process takes about 30 seconds per post.
Is my data secure?
Yes. Your API keys are stored encrypted on our server and never exposed in the browser. Your posts and settings are stored in a secure Supabase database. We never sell your data or use it to train AI models. Your content is yours.
What's the Leonardo AI prompt for?
Every generated post includes a suggested image prompt optimised for Leonardo AI — a powerful AI image generator. Copy the prompt, paste it into app.leonardo.ai and generate a matching image for your post. Images significantly increase engagement on most platforms.
